Naturally, where you go on your next family holiday will determine to an extent what you can do but there are a number of activities that are widely available at popular holiday destinations. Here's a few ideas to get you started.

If you find it a struggle to tear your kids away from iPads or computer games or just worry about them getting bored, why not embark on one or more of the following activities.

Water parks

Surely whoever came up with the concept of a water park deserves a medal? From hotels with a few flumes to all encompassing destinations with rides and more, water parks are a fabulous way to entertain both young and old for half a day, a whole day or more.

Unsurprisingly, most of the world's highly rated theme parks according to Tripadvisor are in and around Orlando, Florida in the USA.

There are however plenty in Europe and other parts of the world too that are ideal for those taking a holiday with kids. Five of the best theme parks for families include:

Water sports

Some exclusions of height and age do apply to certain sports, so be sure you know this in advance to avoid any disappointed tantrums!

Cycling

There's no better way to see your destination than by hopping in two wheels and exploring the landscape. It's also a fabulous way of tiring children out!

Whether you take a gentle stroll along the seafront or head inland to tackle mountain trails, you can rent bikes in most destinations across Europe.

If you're unsure of where you're going, bike tours are also easy to arrange in all but the tiniest of holiday destinations.

Go into the wilderness

Whether you hop on a bike or set off on two feet, getting little ones out and about when on a family break is a great way to entertain, educate and exhaust!

Many destinations loved by families have nature reserves or national parks full of trails, wildlife and countless scenic spots, not to mention icnic plots and even some BBQ pits.

From the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the Algarve to the Everglades in Florida, you can find your own way to enjoy the great outdoors.

From dinner cruises complete with entertainment to marine spotting expeditions and lazy day trips visiting bays, snorkelling and swimming, a boat trip is a fantastic way for those on family holidays to get out to sea and experience something a little different together.
